iGA Upgrades Government Data Network (GDN) Infrastructure
26 Oct 2023
Bahrain is among the first countries to launch a national government network, said Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) Deputy Chief Executive of Operations and Governance, Dr. Khalid Ahmed Almutawah. The network operates over 5,000 government systems and services, connecting more than 45 government entities, reaffirming the Kingdom’s reputation as a pioneer in the region when it comes to adopting and implementing government cloud computing policies.
Dr. Almutawah said that in a significant move towards further improving efficiency and security, the iGA announced an upgrade to the Government Data Network (GDN) infrastructure, which includes the implementation of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), a technology that efficiently directs data transmitted through communication networks. This improvement enables government entities to securely exchange data at a high level, while also increasing network availability and overall performance.
He added that this improvement reaffirms Bahrain's reputation for launching initiatives that harness methodologies and features offered by modern systems. The upgrade also aligns with the Kingdom's focus on harnessing advanced technologies to achieve national development goals across all aspects of life, particularly in the government services sector.
The move is in line with the iGA’s efforts to keep pace with network technology advancements. It also contributes to the adoption of new technologies, such as SD-WAN, an innovative approach to intelligently and efficiently managing data traffic in wide area networks (WAN). This technology aims to enhance network performance, provide a better user experience, and improve security through data encryption. With its programmability and flexible control, it assists in network integration and simplification of management.
Dr. Almutawah explained that this project seeks to leverage the updated protocol to prevent breaches and threats to government networks. This involves restructuring the government network to ensure the application of security policies and mitigate the risks associated with unauthorized device access.
In response to growing challenges faced by government entities in data management, the iGA aims to optimize resource utilization and reduce network congestion by making intelligent MPLS L3 routing decisions. This contributes to enhancing system performance and meeting the government's objectives of providing quality services and protecting sensitive data. Additionally, this migration potentially leads to cost savings by reducing hardware requirements, simplifying management procedures, and optimizing bandwidth utilization while ensuring security measures are in place.
